Olivia Telford tells good stories. She informs of the problem with everyday examples, describes the evidence base and explains any jargon without being patronising. Practical tips and exercises to either define if you have a problem or the nature of it are introduced early. The scientific background is given for her case and referenced so you can check it yourself later, but the flow is not interrupted. She gently leads you in and almost before you know it, you have become adept at the ideas and principles. The chapters are not too long even though they cover big and powerful ideas and practices. Even though the final chapter to the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) book introduces mindfulness as a part of the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) I think that better value would come from reading the Mindfulness book first. In the Mindfulness book Olivia tackles myths and criticisms of the technique directly and dispels them. Although both books address common problems like anxiety and depression, the CBT has some strategies for overcoming procrastination, excessive guilt, jealousy and addiction as well as becoming more assertive. Duty of care to readers is also addressed as there are clear sections giving advice when to seek specialist or outside help if these techniques are not working for you. Cheat tip: the end of each chapter has the learning points succinctly summarised for you, so reading these first won't spoil the deeper reading and tells you if the chapter has what you want. Warning about cheat tip: Olivia has ordered the chapters logically and so jumping around will spoil her gentle guidance and induction.
